FM-200 vs Novec 1230: Choosing Clean-Agent Suppression

Both protect electronics without water damage — the real difference today is environmental. Here’s how to choose.

FM-200 vs Novec 1230: Choosing Clean-Agent Suppression

Both are clean agents — so what’s the difference?

FM-200 (HFC-227ea) and Novec 1230 (FK-5-1-12) are both electrically non-conductive, residue-free clean agents used to protect electronics and irreplaceable assets — see our clean-agent page. The main practical difference today is environmental.

Environmental status

  • FM-200 — a high global-warming-potential (GWP) agent being phased down (not banned) under the Kigali Amendment; existing systems stay legal to operate and service
  • Novec 1230 — a low-GWP (≈ 1) alternative, increasingly specified for new installs to future-proof

How to choose

For an existing FM-200 system, keep operating and servicing it. For a new installation in the UAE, a low-GWP agent (Novec 1230 or an inert gas) is the future-proof choice. We weigh cylinder space, cost and room conditions with you and design to NFPA 2001 — see fire suppression systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is FM-200 being banned?

No — it is being phased down because of its high GWP; existing systems remain legal to operate and service.

Which is better for a server room?

Both work well; for new installs we usually recommend a low-GWP agent such as Novec 1230.
