Overview
Sprinkler heads open individually in response to heat (except deluge), discharging water directly onto the fire — controlling it early and limiting spread. Governed by NFPA 13.
System types
- Wet pipe — pipes always hold water; the most common type for heated spaces (offices, hotels, malls, residential)
- Dry pipe — pipes hold pressurised air; for unheated/freezing spaces such as car parks and cold warehouses
- Pre-action — water is held back until a separate detector trips and a head opens; for data centres, archives and museums where accidental discharge is costly
- Deluge — open heads discharge all at once on detection; for high-hazard areas such as hangars and transformer yards
Head types
- Pendent (most common, finished ceilings)
- Upright (exposed-pipe / industrial)
- Sidewall (corridors, small rooms)
- Concealed (decorative cover plate)

Frequently asked questions
Which system for a data centre or freezer?
Pre-action for data centres/archives (avoids accidental water release); dry pipe for freezers and unheated spaces.
Do sprinklers all go off at once?
No — in wet, dry and pre-action systems only the heads near the heat open. Only deluge systems discharge all heads at once, and they are used for special high-hazard areas.
