Overview
A portable fire extinguisher tackles a small fire in its early stage. Choosing correctly matters — the wrong agent (for example water on a live-electrical or cooking-oil fire) can make things far worse. Selection is driven by the fire class and the location.
Fire classes (UAE / European)
The UAE commonly uses the European (BS EN 2) class letters. Note the key trap: under EN, Class C means flammable gases, whereas under the US (NFPA) system Class C means energised electrical — so always confirm by what is actually burning.
| Class | What burns |
|---|---|
| A | Solids — wood, paper, fabric, plastics |
| B | Flammable liquids — petrol, diesel, oils, paint |
| C | Flammable gases — LPG, methane (EN classification) |
| D | Combustible metals |
| F | Cooking oils & fats (commercial kitchens) |
| Electrical | Not a separate class under EN — use a non-conductive agent on live equipment |
Extinguisher types & where used
| Type | Classes | Where used | Do not use on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | A | Offices, shops, schools, warehouses | Live electrical, liquids, cooking oil |
| Foam (AFFF) | A, B | Flammable-liquid stores, mixed offices/warehouses | Cooking oil; live electrical unless dielectrically tested |
| Dry powder (ABC) | A, B, C | Workshops, plant rooms, vehicles, outdoors | Enclosed/occupied indoor spaces (visibility, residue) |
| CO₂ | B, electrical | Server & electrical rooms, offices with electronics | Cooking oil; mind the frost-cold horn |
| Wet chemical | F (and A) | Commercial kitchens, fryers | Live electrical |
| Clean agent | B & electrical (A on larger units) | Data centres, archives, telecom rooms | Confirm the unit’s class rating |
Colour coding (common UAE convention)
Under BS EN 3 the body is red with a colour band: water (red), foam (cream), dry powder (blue), CO₂ (black), wet chemical (yellow). Water-mist (white) and clean-agent (green) bands are common conventions rather than formal BS EN 3 colours — always read the label, not just the colour.

Frequently asked questions
Which extinguisher do I use on an electrical fire?
A CO₂ or clean-agent extinguisher — they are non-conductive and leave no residue. Never use water or standard foam on live electrical equipment.
What about a kitchen / cooking-oil fire?
Use a wet chemical (Class F) extinguisher, ideally with a fire blanket. Never use CO₂ or water on a fryer — it can spread the burning oil.
Do you refill and service extinguishers?
Yes — we supply, service, pressure-test and refill extinguishers, and can cover them under an Annual Maintenance Contract.
