Emergency & Exit Lighting

On mains failure, emergency lighting illuminates escape routes and exit signs mark the way out — supplied, installed and tested to code.

Illuminated green exit sign and emergency light

Overview

When normal power fails, emergency lighting automatically illuminates escape routes, and exit/running-man signs mark the egress path and final exits — so occupants can evacuate safely.

Maintained vs non-maintained

  • Maintained — lit continuously and stays lit on battery; used where sudden darkness causes panic (cinemas, malls, assembly halls) and for exit signs
  • Non-maintained — off in normal use, switches on only when mains fails; the common type in offices and industrial premises

Key requirements

  • Automatic operation on power loss
  • Typically ≥ 90 minutes of emergency illumination
  • Periodic function tests plus an annual full-duration test, with records for the authority

Standards

To NFPA 101 / BS 5266 and the UAE Fire & Life Safety Code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained?

Maintained fittings are always lit and stay on during a power cut (used for exit signs and panic-risk areas); non-maintained fittings come on only when the mains fails (common in offices).

How long must emergency lighting stay on?

Typically at least 90 minutes after a power failure, with an annual full-duration test recorded for the authority.
